Stellantis (NYSE:STLA) announced Wednesday it is discontinuing its hydrogen fuel cell technology development program.
The automaker cited several factors for the decision, including limited availability of hydrogen refueling infrastructure, high capital requirements, and the need for stronger consumer purchasing incentives.
Stellantis said it does not anticipate adoption of hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles before the end of the decade.
As a result, the company will no longer launch its planned new range of hydrogen-powered Pro One vehicles this year.
The company is discussing alternatives for Symbio with its partners. Stellantis emphasized that the decision to halt hydrogen development will not impact staffing at its production sites.
